In just a few days of each other, this painting showed up on my feeds of two different social media platforms. Each time struck me, especially the expressions of Jane and her lady’s maids. The skill behind Paul Delaroche is incredible. With his skill, he captured such emotion and feeling - the anguish and the suffering of each.
This painting captures the tragic end of Lady Jane Grey, who reigned as Queen of England for only nine days. After Edward VI grew ill and died young, it was his half-sister Mary who had Lady Jane beheaded, after being tried for treason, on February 12, 1554. Edward and others had hoped putting Lady Jane on the throne would prevent England from going back under Catholic rule, but that did not come to pass and Lady Jane refused to turn away from her Protestant beliefs.
