As I was pursuing the works displayed at the Denver Art Museum last Fall, I came across this piece by Henry Roderick Newman and my first thought was “wow, that looks so tranquil and relaxing. I want to visit that spot.” Then I read the description. It reads:
“The dramatic viewpoint of this work-looking down from the village of San Terenzo on Italy's west coast, with castles perched on the rocks-adds an air of romanticism to this scene. It was the location where, in 1822, the English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned when his boat was caught in a storm. However, Henry Roderick Newman counteracts the tragic history of the site with light colors and a crystalline atmosphere, where every detail is carefully rendered, whether near or far.”
